William is listed as being killed in action on 25 Mar 1916. The 10th Battalion war diary entry for that day is transcribed below.

Trenches - Chapigny - 25/3/1916 Saturday: Staff Captain and Brigade Major visited trenches with the C.O. at 10.30am. C.O. again visted at 5.30pm.

Enemy shelled front line trenches and Tilleloy (N) Post very heavily.

12 men went on leave.

Casualties: 2nd Lt W.G. Carty killed; [Other Ranks] 4 killed and 6 wounded.
