Williams service number of 6473 was issued sometime between 15 Mar 1888 when #5440 was issued and 13 Feb 1899 when #6661 was issued.

William was previously Pte 5147 Suffolk Regiment. That number was issued between 19 Jan 1898 whenn #4966 was issued and 2 Jun 1899 when #5315 was issued

Circumstances of Death

William is listed as being killed in action on 11 Jan 1915. The 1st Battalion war diary entry for that day is transcribed below.

11th January - St Yves: About 25 shells came over our trenches during the day without causing casualties. 2 wounded by snipers. Two platoons Arg & Suth Highrs came into trenches and were scattered among A&B Coys. Sgt Webb of B Coy killed. END

A newspaper report in the Warwick Advertiser states that William was killed while inspecting front line troops near St. Yves with his Commanding Officer when he was shot dead by a Sniper.

  • His Soldiers Who Died in the Great War record gives his birthplace at Nottingham and enlistment at Ely (see below)
