Ernest is listed as being killed in action on 10 Dec 1916. The very brief 2nd/5th Battalion war diary entry for the period 8th to 11th December 1916 is transcribed below, in full. No details of any casualties are given and it is assumed that Ernest was killed during the relief on the 10th mentioned below.

Martinsart - 10/12/1916: Battalion relieved the 2/6th Gloucesters in Mouquet Farm area, centre subsection. Relief complete at 11.30am.

Mouquet Farm Sector - 11/12/1916: Battalion extended front to the left relieving 2/6th Warwicks. Relief completed 6am 12/12/16. END
