Circumstances of Death

Stephen is listed as dying of wounds received in action on 1 Aug 1918. He was buried at Albert Communal Cemetery which was used by numerous Field Ambulances brought to the area in preparation for the Somme offensive and it is likely he died in one them. The 11th Battalion was diary suggests that he was one of 52 officers and men killed and wounded during the shelling of their bivouacs. The entry for the 1st August is transcribed below.

Becourt Wood - Aug 1, 1916 - 10/11am: Hostile H.E shells from a heavy gun dropped & exploded in quick succession among the companies in close bivoucs, involving many casualties before the Battn could take cover in the adjoining trenches alloted to the Companies. 3 Officers [named] were wounded. OR's Killed 10, wounded 37 missing 2. Total 52.

Previous to this date no serious shelling of the Wood had taken place. The Battn was at once moved about 300yard outside the Eastern edge of the wood, where a line of good deep trenches exist. END
