Circumstances of Death

Maj Halcomb is listed as being killed in action on 25 Oct 1918. The 295th Brigade was diary entry for the period 23rd to 31st Oct is transcribed below.

Hem - Oct - 23rd to 31st: Ordinary routine work. All ranks in billets. Routes reconnoitred in case of further advance, also positions to cross Battle Line.

On 25th Major T.C. Carlyon DSO, RFA left to take over command of 71st Bde. Major W.P. Akerman DSO again in command.

Major L.B. Halcomb B/295 was killed on 25th inst when out reconnoitring. His death is much regretted by all ranks in this Bde. Halcomb came up as Capt of B/64? when the Division came to France and was a most popular and capable officer.

  • The link to Leamington Spa is twofold. Maj. Halcomb's parents Sydney Broughton and Marion (nee Abell) Halcomb were married at
    Leamington St. Paul's on 7 Oct 1891 and Marion was living in Leamington Spa prior to her marriage. She was the brother of William
    Abell who is also listed on the New Milverton memorial.
  • The St. Mark's WW1 Roll of Honour also lists Leonard Halcomb and Ronald Halcomb as having served in and survived the war.
