Walter is listed as being killed in action on 28 Jun 1918. The 6th Battalion war diary entries for the period 27 to 29 Jun 1918 are transcribed below.

Trenches NW of Albert 27 June 1918: Enemy registered on Support line with heavy and light T.M. [Trench Mortars]. Patrolling by day by A Coy discovered several gaps in enemy wire opposite Hairpin.

B & D Coys still rehearsing attack just east of Warloy.

Trenches NW of Albert 28 June 1918: Some shelling by enemy of front and support trenches. Our heavies fired on enemy front trenches and wire.

Trenches NW of Albert 29 June 1918: Quiet day.
