Circumstances of Death

Joseph is recorded as being killed in action on 11 Sep 1916.  The 24th Battalion war diary entry for that day is transcribed below.

High Wood - September 11th 1916: Battalion relieves 1st North Hants in High Wood sector starting from Becourt Wood 3am and arriving in the line wat 8am. Dispositions:- D Coy Right Front; C Coy Left Front in Queens Trench; B Coy in Support in Black Watch trench; A Coy and Bombers in Reserve in Mill Street.

During afternoon the enemy bombarded Black Watch trench intermittently - 2 platoons of B Coy were withdrawn to Argyle Trench. 2/Lieut V Taylor wounded.

at 9.30pm enemy opened heavy bombardment of Support area - evidently expecting an attack. Lt Mobberley and party of 8 men killed in Black Watch trench. Bombardment ceased at 10.10pm. Our artillery bombardment has been continuous. END
