Circumstances of Death

Herbert is listed as being killed in action on 13 May 1917. He was originally reported as being missing in action and was still missing on 20 Jul 1917 when Herbert's mother wrote to the Red Cross seeking word of his whereabouts and enquiring as to whether he had been taken prisoner.

In the Field - 13.5.1917 - Railway Embankment U.27.c.35.55 & Mory: Fine day. At 12.30am the Battalion moved by companies and formed up on tape in front of the railway track between Ecoust and Bullecourt, and were in position by 3.10am.

At 3.40am (Zero) our barrage opened and the Battalion went forward. We penetrated into the village on the right but were unable to remain there.

At 10am orders were received from the 91st Infy Bde to withdraw all men possible to the camp near Mory, this was done without casualties, and the remainder of the men returned at night and next day.
