Circumstances of Death

Arthur is listed as dying of wounds on 21 Arp 1917, as he is buried at a graveyard not connected to any Field Ambulance, Cascualty Clearing Station or Field Hospital we are assuming that he died in the field of his wounds shortly after they were incurred. The war diary for the 19th - 21st Apr 1917 is transcribed below.

Epehy - April 19: During the night 19th - 20th the battalion gained ground O O 114. A Coy were established in Quarry at X.29.d.2.4 and pushed a patrol on to high ground X.29.d. D Coy on the left made a post on high ground X.24.d.9.9 and sent patrols to Ossus Wood and Vendhuile but were unable to enter either place as they were strongly held.

Epehy - April 20: During the day dispositions remained as last night. At 8.30pm A Coy attacked high ground at X.29.a E of Little Priel Farm. The enemy was driven in from his outpost line and many were killed. It was impossible to hold the ground gained as the whole position was enfiladed by enemy M.G. fire from higher ground on the S.E. A Coy withdrew to the Quarry.

Later in the night the battalion was relieved by the 4th Bn East Lancs Regt. One Officer and four NCO's from per company were left behind to show relieving battalion the situation. Relief complete at 6am on 21st. Weather fine.

Epehy - April 21: The battalion rested, weather fine.
