Circumstances of Death

David is listed as having died of wounds on 14 Jul 1916. A report in the Hinckley Echo on 30 Aug 1916 states that David died in the hospital at Aberville [Abbeville], France from gunshot wounds to the head.

The war diary indicates that David was wounded either on 7 Jul 1916 at Fricourt or between the 8th & 10th Jul 1916 at nearby Contalmaison.  The battalion were out of the lines by 3.30pm on the 10th and went into Billets. David had alson been wounded on 31 May 1916 and was entitled to wear a Wound Stripe on his tunic sleeve.
