Circumstances of Death

Donald is listed as being killed in action on 3 Oct 1916 during the Battle of the Somme, the Battalion war diary for that day is transcribed below. The diary confirms the date that Donald was killed whilst moving in the front lines at .

3/10/196 - Trones Wood: Very wet morning which prevented continuance of Classes and work on construction of Camp. The camp consisting of 59 bivouacs and two tarpaulins was handed over to a Guard of 12th Bttn Rifle Brigade and the Battalion moved into the forward area relieving the 7th K.O.Y.L.I. in front line and trenches of right sector of Divisional Front.

Disposition as follows: (Ref Map Albert 1/40,000) D Company and half of A Company Front Line trenches (N.28.c.6.6. to N.26.c.8.7). B & C companies, remainder of A company in trenches in support. [57C.N.28.c.6.6. was situated west of Le Transloy, east of Guedecourt and north of LesBoeufs - Map it here.]

Very heavy & difficult to get along owing to wet state of ground and relief not completed until about midnight 3rd-3th instant.

2nd Lieut D.C. Hair killed and 2 other ranks wounded. END
