Circumstances Leading to Death (Normally from War Diary)
Samuel is listed as being killed in action on 8 Nov 1918, just 3 days before the Armistice. The war diary entry for that day, and the previous day, is transcribed below. Noyelles - 7th – 0530: Bn left Moyelles with orders to advance through the 149th Inf Bdfe who were holding a position near St. Remy Chausee and to advance to the St Aubin-Avesnes Road. This was however impossible at the time owing to the strong resistance met with near Dourlers some 1000 yards short of the objective. Doulers – 8th – 0730: the attack resumed objective St Aubin-Avesnes Road, this was reached by 0930 hours in spite of heavy enemy machine gun fire. Position held although shelled very heavily until the Scottish Horse passed through Bn about 1514 hours. During this time the enemy counterattacked but was repulsed. Bn withdrew to Moncheau, billeted for the night in Dains. END |
