Circumstances Leading to Death (Normally from War Diary)

Joseph is listed as being killed in action on 23 Oct 1917 which is confirmed by the Brigade war diary, the relevant entry from which is transcribed below.

Near Langemarck - 23 [Oct] 3am: 79th brigade moved forward to positions previously reconnoitered on the Langemarck-Poelcappelle Road about Schrie Boom. The batteries succeeded in getting most of the guns into action before 9:00am  without casualties. Positions taken up were actually on the road itself as providing the only platform for guns, the ground on both sides of the guns being absolutely waterlogged and shell holes. Position in full view of enemy shall that all ammunition and supplies had to be taken to guns at night or undercover of fog. Killed Bm Mills B/79. END
