Circumstances Leading to Death (Normally from War Diary)

Bob is listed as being killed in action on 19 Aug 1916. The Church plaque states that he was killed by a shell outside Contalmaison. Contalmaison is about 3km from Bazentin. The war diary for that day is transcribed below:

Bazentin-le-Petit - 19/8/16: "Cooperated with 8th Royal Berks in a similar attack to that of the night of 17/18th August**. The attack was also unsuccessful. During the day a shell sought and killed Capt. T.H. Rorie & 2/Lieut G.R.S. Layng who had just left Battalion HQ, whilst our casualties in the other ranks were 20 killed and 50 wounded". END

** This was an attack with the 1st Royal Highlanders on the enemy intermediate line which failed with the loss of 10 killed, 52 wounded and 4 missing.
