Circumstances Leading to Death (Normally from War Diary)
George (William as he was known) is listed as being killed in action on 6 May 1915. The Battalion war diary for that day is transcribed below:Krithia 6 May 1915: The Battalion was ordered to push through the front line trenches and try and gain ground. We passed through the trenches of the 1st Bn Royal Dublin Fus and 1st Bn Royal Munster Fus. The Battalion advanced roughly 500 yards under heavy shell and machinegun fire and after a hard struggle gained some high ground to our immediate front where we entrenched, as the left flank of the Brigade were unable to gain ground against a redoubt which was giving much trouble. During the day we lost about 100 killed (including George) and wounded including Capt G C Deans, D W Pollock and T H O Crawley killed, Lt W D Bush wounded. There was no attack during the night. END
