Circumstances Leading to Death (Normally from War Diary)

Arthur was wounded in action and as yet we have been unable to identify the day and place he was wounded. The war diary makes mention of attacks and casualties on a number of days in early November but does not even mention casualties amongst Other Ranks, see more below.

C.L. Kingsford tells us in his book The Story of the Royal Warwickshire Regiment that: "The 10th Royal Warwickshire, advancing through Maresches and Jenlain, waded across the Hogneau on November 7 to attack the high ground beyond the Mons-Bavai Road. The fight was continued the next day to the east of Malplaquet when three officers were killed".

However the three locations mentioned are near Valenciennes some 32 to 50 km's north of Cambrai and Awoingt so it is likely he that he was wounded prior to then. The war diary does tell us that between 27 Oct 1918 and 2nd Nov 1918 were stationed at Cauroir which is less than 3 kms from Awoingt where he was treated in one of either the 38th, 45th or 59th Casualty Clearing Stations and where he was subsequently buried.
