Circumstances Leading to Death (Normally from War Diary)

The Stratford on Avon Herald reported on 9 Aug 1918 that Thomas had accidentally drowned whilst bathing on 27 Jul 1918, however the war diary gives a different version of events and is transcribed below:

27 July 1918 - Busnettes: "Wet day. Church parade service held indoors at 10am. Battalion prepares to relieve the 2nd Lancs Fus in right sub-sector Vinages Sector at night. Relief complete 12.15 AM. D Coy have 7 men fall into La Bassee Canal owing to a barrel bridge overturning & 1 man drowned. Hostile artillery fairly active"

In summary it seems that Thomas was drowned as he was crossing the La Bussee Canal when the bridge he was on overturned.
