Circumstances Leading to Death (Normally from War Diary)           

On the day William was killed the battalion were in trenches to the north of Poelcapelle. The war diary lists three separate actions that took place that day.
  1. At 4.40am D Company carried out a raid on enemy positions at Turenne (Railway) Crossing, before retiring after supporting troops were unable to link up with the attacking party.
  2. At 4.45pm a 200 strong enemy raiding party, dressed in white smocks, attacked the advanced posts of the battalion. The enemy attacked failed to penetrate the battalion lines and was eventually driven back under heavy machine and Lewis gun fire and any ground they gained was retaken.
  3. The enemy laid down a heavy artillery barrage on the battalion lines between 4.45 and 5.10pm
  4. Casuaties for the day were 4 men killed and 9 wounded.
