Circumstances Leading to Death (Normally from War Diary)

We are unable to say on which day David was wounded. The battalion had entered the front lines at Arleaux on the 10th May and they were subject to heavy artillery barrages on the 10th, 11th and 12th May 1917. David died on the 17th, more than likely at 6th Casualty Clearing Station which used the cemetery at Barlin where he is buried.
