Circumstances Leading to Death (Normally from War Diary)

His records indicate that John died of wounds on 13 Apr 1917. The war diary suggests that he was wounded two days previously on the 11th April when the battalion was engaged in an abandoned attack on Turkish lines 3 miles NW of Shialah.  The attack was abandoned after engaging the enemy when it was realised that they were much stronger than thought and allied troops retired to a position about 2 miles NW of Shialah. During the action the battalion suffered casualties of 1 killed, 21 wounded and 10 sick. The following day a stronger allied force drove back the Ottomans from their original position.
