Circumstances Leading to Death (Normally from War Diary)
Edward died of frostbite at St. Paul's Hospital, Malta apparently just 4 days after arriving in the Balkans. An article (click here) on the RTE website describes the conditions faced by our troops at Gallipoli and this part covers frostbite "In the winter of 1915, in the weeks before the final evacuation of Gallipoli, the soldiers endured freezing night time temperatures and an estimated 16,000 suffered from frostbite and 280 men froze to death. Some cases were so serious that amputations were necessary. Also, in December 1915, there were a series of snowstorms in Gallipoli. The quickly thawing snow flooded the ravines in the area, and hundreds of men drowned. One Australian nurse, Anne Donnell, recalled the effects of the winter cold and wet: ‘Hundreds, the boys say, were drowned because their feet were so paralysed they could not crawl away to safety in time. They endured agonies. Sentries were found dead at their posts, frozen and still clutching their rifles... their fingers were too frozen to pull the trigger. And some we have in hospital are losing both feet, some both hands’."| Personal & Family History |
