Circumstances Leading to Death (Normally from War Diary)

The battalion were order to form at the starting point at Canal Bank and to attack and capture enemy positions at Winchester Farm, Stoke Farm and York Farm. The attack started at 5.30am and was "extremely successful" with objective captured. 350 prisoners were taken and 10 machine guns and 2 anti-tank guns were captured. The casualties on the day were 31 killed (including Thomas), 33 missing and 158 wounded
