Circumstances Leading to Death (Normally from War Diary)

The day that Percy was killed was the first day of the Battle of Amiens with the town of Amiems being some 25km directly west along the River Somme from their positions. The battalion were ordered to attack German positions at Gressane Wood, Malard Wood and The Quarry. They assembled just behind the Green Line and after the initial barrage by Allied Artillery they began their attack at about 10.00am. Although held up for a while by machine gun and artillery fire they succeeded in capturing their objectives and consolidated their positions.
