Circumstances Leading to Death (Normally from War Diary)

The battalion were ordered to attack enemy positions at Hooge and Bellewarde Lake, the attack was held up by a combination of shell, machine gun and rifle fire and then an enormous artillery barrage which at times hit 90 shells per minute. The attack was abandoned with 309 casualties incurred.
