Charles' original service number was 5726 and he was a member of the 6th Dragoon Guards. This means that Charles enlisted in the Dragoon Guards at some stage between the issue of number 5530 on 12th January 1911 and the issue of 6624 on 24th January 1912. Like many of his colleagues he transferred to 11th Squadron of the Machine Gun Corps (Cavalry) sometime after its formation in February 1915. |
Circumstances of DeathCharles is listed as being killed in action 31 May 1917. The war diary entries for the 30th and 31st May are transcribed below and it is presumed he was killed during the the hosite artillery activity in the afternoon of the 31st (see below). Map Reference L.10.a.6.6 - 30th - 7am: At 3am enemy bombarded MG emplacement in Switch Trench L.5.b.8.5 from direction of Sugar Factory with rifle grenades and LT Mortars. This bombardment lasted until 4am. No damage was done. 33 projectiles were thrown at this position during the hour referred to. 30th 4pm: Situation unchanged. Weather Fine Map Reference L.10.a.6.6 - 31st - 4am. Situation reported unchanged. Quiet night along front. Night Cloudy. 31st - 4pm Situation Normal. Considerable hostile artillery activity around an position in N Sunken Road from 8am to 4pm. Enemy probably ranging on X Road W of Hargicourt. |
