Numerous newspapers reported on 4 Sep 1916 that on 1 Sep 1916 "Corporal William Jesse Wilson of Welford drowned whilst bathing in the sea off Dovercourt nr Harwich in Essex. A Naval officer attempted to rescue him but failed".
