Circumstances Leading to Death (Normally from War Diary)           

On 2nd September 1918 the 12th Battalion were involved in the attack on enemy lines near the Canal Du Nord south of a line between Moislains and Le Forest. The attack was succesful and all objectives were seized included Haut Allaines and finally Scutari and Broussa trenches. The attack though came at the cost of 227 casualties including 41 who were killed and 14 listed as missing. Ernest was one of those either killed or missing. The war diary notes that "An extraordinary large number of enemy dead were accounted for".
