War Diary entry for the day Edward was killed -
Railway Wood Trenches 27 Mar 1916 - "At about 12 noon the Germans shelled our front line trenches very badly for about 2 hours. Levelling the Y Wood trenches almost flat. We were very lucky though to get off with only about 22 casualties mostly wounded, unfornately 4 were Sgts". Railway Wood and Y Wood are marked in the map below
