Circumstances Leading to Death (Normally from War Diary)

The battalion was in the trenches NE of Farquissart near Rhonnda Sap and were ordered to attack and occupy enemy trenches west of the River Layes and in particular near Sugar Loaf. In reality the attack was a disaster and any man who got the artillery and machine gun fire to reach the objectives did not come back. The attack failed and the battalion suffered 322 casualties. During the same attack further along the lines the Australian 53rd Battalion lost of its men except 3 and they were wounded. The full story of the attack by the Australians can be read here.
