Circumstances Leading to Death (Normally from War Diary)

The battalion was ordered to capture enemy positions near Bucquoy and Achiet le Petit. The operation went ahead in very heavy mist made worse by a smoke barrage. The first 3 phases went well with few casualties and the capture of many prisoners and a lot of machine & field guns. However when Achiet le Petit was taken the mist lifted and it was seen that the right flank was 1500 yards ahead of the main advance allowing a German counter attack which halted the advance. The battalion dug in and consolidated the gains.
