Circumstances of Death

Charles is listed as dying of wounds on 4th September 1917 at the 11th Stationary Hospital in Rouen. We do not know, at this stage when he was wounded but we do know that he was admitted to the 149th Field Ambulance on 18th July 1917 with a gun shot wound to the chest and at 5pm the same day he was transferred to the 19th Casualty Clearing Station at Agnez-les-Duisans. We cannot confirm that this is the same wound from which he died about 48 days later but it appears likely. No mention is made in the 223rd Brigade war diary of particular actions or casualties during the month of the July 1917.
