Alfred is listed as being killed in action on 21 May 1915 just 19 days after arriving in France. The 1st Battalion war diary entries for the period 20th to 22nd May 1915 are transcribed below. 20th May 1915 – Wieltje: Fine and warmer. Quiet day. Trenches shelled at intervals. Snipers very active during night. 9 casualties. Continually asking for artillery retaliation without effect. 21st May 1915 – Wieltje: Fine day, very little shelling. Aeroplane brought down about 7pm by direct hit from our Ariel Gun. Working on trenches continued 22nd May 1915 – Wieltje: Quiet day in the trenches. Shelled HQ from 6pm till 7.30pm, no damage. Heavy thunderstorm 9.30pm. Working continued in the trenches. |
