Circumstances of Death

Bernard is listed as dying of Toxema on 10th July 1917 at the Warneford Hospital, Leamington Spa. The following is an explanation of the events that led to his death.

Bernard went to Egypt in December 1915, and was transferred to France in February, 1916. In June, 1916, he was severely wounded by shrapnel while protecting one of his men during a bombardment on the Somme. He rejoined his Regiment in France in January, 1917, but his wounds broke out again after an advance into the German trenches near Hebuterne on February 27th. He was invalided home, but recovered and was passed for active service in June. His wounds, however, broke out again, blood poisoning supervened, and he died in the Warneford Hospital, Leamington on July 10th 1917
