Circumstances of Death

Sidney died of Double Pneumonia at the Red Cross Hospital in Stratford-on-Avon on 2nd May 1915.

death_cert_sidney_earley.jpeg Sidney was not awarded the Victory medal which means that it is most likely he did not serve abroad in WW1. He would have been in Stratford because the 2nd Battalion, Hampshire Regiment moved to Stratford-upon-Avon to join the 88th Brigade, 29th Division on February 13, 1915 and from there the Battalion moved off to Gallipoli and it appears that he was taken ill before the Battalion went to Gallipoli.

Sidney had served in South Africa prior to WW1.His service number suggests that he originally enlisted between 29th July 1907 and 4th February 1908.

Short History of the Movements of the 2nd Battalion:

  • Mhow, India:
The battalion was stationed here at the outbreak of the war in August 1914.
  • Plymouth, England:
The battalion arrived here on December 22, 1914, after returning from India.
  • Romsey, England:
After Plymouth, they moved to Romsey.
  • Stratford-upon-Avon:
On February 13, 1915, they moved to Stratford-upon-Avon to join the 88th Brigade, 29th Division.
  • Warwick, England:
From Stratford-upon-Avon, they moved to Warwick to continue their training for deployment to France and the Gallipoli campaign.
After the Gallipoli campaign, the battalion was sent to France in March 1916, where it fought on the Western Front for the remainder of the war.
