Circumstances of Death

Horace is listed as dying of wounds on 30th December 1917. The 101st Company war diary entry for that day is transcribed below and is self-explanatory.

Heninel - 30.[12.17]: Usual trench fighting continues. Weather conditions very cold. Hostile shelling took place around our gun positions and Batteries in the rear. From 5pm enemy machine guns firing from the direction of Fontaine Wood continued throughout the night on junction of Farmers Lane and Shaft Avenue. Our guns again carried out indirect fire on Cross Roads and Bridges as before.

At 5.30am PTE SHEASBY of No 1 Section was badly wounded and succumbed to his injuries later in the day. END
