Circumstances Leading to Death (Normally from War Diary)

On the 14th April Stephen was involved in the attack on, and capture of, Cepy Farm on the Gricourt - St. Quentin Road. The following day the battalion was subjected to what was basically a dawn to dusk artillery bombardment that caused casualties of 15 dead, including Stephen and 26 wounded. However the battalion held on and were relieved on the night of 15th/16th April.
