Circumstances of Death
|
Harold is listed as being killed in action on 24 Apr 1917. The Battery war diary is missing many pages including April 1917 however the book The History of 135th Siege Battery R.G.A by Lieutenant DF.J. Walters M.C. and Lieutenant C.R. Hurle Hobbs mentions Harolds death and the following is extracted from that book. "On the evening of the 24th, the day of the unsuccessful attack by the 29th, 15th and 17th Divisions, Lieutentant Goodwin and Signaller Hill were returning from the O.P. and had got within half a mile of the Battery when a shell burst behind and killed them both. They were found later in the evening by Bombadier Todd. This was not the only disaster, for earlier in the day Gunner Lamb had been killed in the Battery position by a premature from the Battery just behind us. These gallant fellows were buried side by side in the Cemetery at Arras on the following day". |
