Other Information/Previous Regiments/Units
On November 8th 1915, Digby joined the Inns of Court O.T.C., and then in the following December joined the 11th Battn. of the Royal Sussex Regiment as a signaller. He entered France just after Christmas, 1916, and though recommended for a commission remained as a signaller.
Circumstances Leading to Death (Normally from War Diary)
Digby was killed on 21st March 1918, the first day of the German Spring Offensive which was a massive attack across nearly the whole front which nearly got the German Army to Paris before logicistical and other issues and allied counter attacks brought the advance to an end.On the day he was killed the battalion moved from Clery to Gurlu Wood then by motor vehicle to the front lines at Villers Faucon where they took up positions near the Level Crossing. The only casualty mentioned on the day was a 2nd Lt Meo there was not reported fighting except for artillery fire and we are assuming that Digby was killed by shell fire. The following day the battalion was ordered to retire to Tincourt Wood.
