Circumstances Leading to Death (Normally from War Diary)           

Amos listed as dying of his wounds on 31 Aug 1915 at the 1st/2nd London Casualty Clearing Station at Merville. Below are the transcriptions of a newspaper article and the Battalion war diary.

Royal Leamington Spa Courier - 10 Sep 1915

On Friday last Mr & Mrs William Ward received the sad intelligence that their eldest son Pte. Amos Ward 10th. Warwicks had succumbed to his wounds received in France on the 31st ult (see below). In a letter from 2nd Lt Coldicott he was reported wounded by the bursting of a rifle grenade and hopes were held out that he would soon be home, but unfortunately he died the following morning. In a letter dated September 2nd his officer conveys to his parents they sympathy of himself and his comrades and pays a high tribute to the deceased soldier's qualities concluding as follows "He was truly a good and brave soldier, always ready to do his duty whatever it might be with a right good will, and his cheery presence will be greatly missed by us all" Before joining the Army the deceased was a guard on the L and N.W Railway where he was very popular.

Battalion War Diary - 30-8-1915 - In Trenches at Canadian Orchard

In trenches. Quiet morning. C.O went round trenches with Brig Gen Twyford. Information was received in evening that there were two German spies in our area. Search parties under Major Taylor and Sergt Juggins went out but without success. In the evening Major Cavendish R.G.A 87D visited Bn HQ to arrange about intercommunication in case of attack. Enemy fired some shells at Indian Village – no damage. We had working parties in Argyle communication Trench and Richmond Road during the night.
