Circumstances Leading to Death (Normally from War Diary)           

Edwin was killed in action on 15 Sep 1918 at or near Maissemy Ridge, Villeveque on the St. Quentin front. Edwin won his military medal on this day. The war diary for day is transcribed below:
 
Villeque and Marteville Sept 15th: At 5.30am A, B & C Companies attacked under an artillery barrage with a view to gaining the high ground in R.30 and R.36.  All objectives were gained, many of the enemy were killed and 9 taken prisoner and 10 machine guns captured. Throughout the day enemy snipers were very active and caused many casualties. Casualties for the day were 13 killed and 50 wounded.
 
The Corps commander. Lt Gen Sir W. Braithewaite K.C.B Commanding IX Corps wired congratulations on capture of sime very important ground. The battalion was relieved by Loyal North Lancs. 1st Inf Bde and moved back into Brigade Reserve near Vermand. END
