Circumstances Leading to Death (Normally from War Diary)           

Overnight of the 4th/5th February 1917 D Company were ordered to attack and clear a section of Ancre Trench between map references 57d.R.8.b.0.5 and 57d.R.8.b.3.5 however they enemy opened up an artillery barrage which forced the company to withdraw to the quarries at 57d.R.a.2.2. John was killed during this action.
