Circumstances Leading to Death (Normally from War Diary)

The battalion were in the lines at St. Floris when they came under attack from enemy troops including a field gun which was only 300 yards from the front lines. The attacks, at least 3, lasted all day and all were repulsed. Joseph was killed during this time. At the end of the day the battalion were relieved by a number of Scottish units. The casualties that day were three dead and 16 wounded.
