Circumstances Leading to Death (Normally from War Diary)

George is listed as being killed in action on 22 Aug 1917. The War Diary indicates that George was killed during an attack on both Spot & Springfield Farms which failed due to the tanks involved being stuck in mud. The war diary for the day is transcribed below.

St. Julien Sector - 22 Aug: 'At 4:45am the attack started. C Coy on right with as their objective SPOT FARM, D Coy on left with SPRINGFIELD FARM as their objective. The tanks moved forward and were to signal the infantry to rush concrete blockhouses when the tanks had dealt with them. Owing to the bad state of the ground the tanks got ditched. The delay gave the enemy time to recover and our attack was not able to take its two objectives. A series of posts were established in shell holes near up to the block houses.

23 Aug: During 22/23 night C&D were relieved by A Coy. B Coy relieved the two leading Coys of the 1/5th R War R. C Coy going into support and D into reserve'
