Circumstances of Death
Albert is listed as dying from wounds received in action on 20th April 1918. We have not been able to identify the exact date and place he wounded but a letter to his wife shows that he was admitted to the 56th General Hospital, Etaples on 12th April 1918 and he would have been transferred there from a Casualty Clearing Station. The war diary indicates that Edward was wounded on either the 9th or 10th of April and the 1st Battalion war diary entries for the period 8th to 12th April are transcribed below: Siege Camp – 8.4.1918: Battalion left Siege Camp and entrained at Peselhoek near Poperinghe and arrived at Fouquereuil at 4.30pm and marched to billets at Beuvry. Beuvry - 9.4.1918: First attack on Givenchy started. Battalion moved up in support of 11th Division. 10.30am: C & D Coys moved to vicinity of Le Preole 4 OR joined from Division Wing. Le Preole vicinity – 10.4.1918: Situation unchanged, Casualties 1 OR killed, 6 OR wounded. Le Preole vicinity – 11.4.1918: Situation unchanged Le Preole vicinity – 12.4.1918: Situation unchanged |
