Original Enlistment

We have not been able to discover George's exact enlistment date but we do know from the Census that in 1901 he was a Driver in the Royal Field Artillery and that
by 1907 he had left the Army and was employed as a Coachman and living near Hull.

Circumstances of Death

George is listed as being killed in action on 1 Nov 1914. The 36th Brigade War diary does not mention casualties but the entries for the period 29th Oct to 1st Nov 1914 are transcribed below.

October 29th 1914 – 1.30pm: 48th Battery came out of action and bivouaced for the night in clearing in wood 600 yards north of Hooge Chateau

October 30th 1914 – 2pm: 71st Battery moved to position 1000 yards east of Hooge Chateau formerly occupied by 15th Battery. 4th Battery reoccupied previous positions in action.

October 31st 1914 – 12noon: 36th Brigade marched to Dickebush – position supposed critical.
9pm: Marched back to Hooge – position improved
11.30pm: Arrive back at Hooge – billeted in farm house 700 yards NE of Chateau. 71st Battery to positions of 30/10/14 & 48th Battery to position in action of 30/4/1914.

November 1st 1914: Moved Brigade HQ’s to Sinale Farm 1000 yards N of Chateau
