Circumstances Leading to Death (Normally from War Diary)

There is a discrepancy regarding the date George was killed, the CWGC website gives it as 11 Jan 1918 but the war diary states it was the day before on the 10th. We have gone with the war diary because no casualties are mentioned for the 11th and the diary specifically names George on the 10th when the battalion were in the support lines at Hedge Street & Canada Tunnels. It appears that George was on sentry duty at Canada Tunnel when he was killed by artillery shells and another man was wounded.

5 days before was killed there was a terrible fire inside Hedge Street tunnel which killed 21 men who were inside the tunnel which was used for shelter and storage. Click here for the story of the fire and click here for a general overview regarding the huge network of tunnels built by all sides.
