Circumstances Leading to Death (Normally from War Diary)

Arthur is listed as being killed in action on 28 Feb 1915 at Cuinchy. He was standing next to his brother George when a shell exploded above them killing Arthur and slightly wounding George. The brief Battalion war diary entry for the day is transcribed below.

28th Feb 1915: Casualties. 1 Other Rank killed
                                         2 Other Ranks wounded

The Battalion was relieved by the Worcestershire Regt and the 5th Brigade took over the Cuinchy trenches.

During February the enemy frequently shelled the trenches both with High Explosive and shrapnel, occasionally rifle fire and Bombing was also employed but comparatively speaking this did very little damage to our position what was constantly improved and strengthened during the month. END

Arthur was originally buried near Cuinchy but his grave must have been lost at some stage and he is now remember on the Le Touret Memorial.
