Thomas is listed as dying of wounds on 1 May 1918. The 14th Battalion War diary for the 30th April 1918 is transcribed below and is self explanatory. Nieppe Forest 30/4/1918: The same [as previous day]. At 7pm a shell fell into a building at Battalion HQ wounding RSM Taylor. Fortunately no one else was injured. Bn HQ moved across the road into a cellar. A Sergt and a Private has been killed and 3 others wounded. The weather up to now has been fine. A lot of work has been done on the trenches and wire. There is little shelling of the front line. END RSM Taylor died of the wounds caused by the shell the following day in the Highland Casualty Clearing Station at Aire. |
