Circumstances of Death

Lewis is listed as being killed in action on 28 May 1915 when the listening post he was manning was attacked by enemy forces. The 1st/7th Battalion war diary entries for the 28th is transcribed below.

Steenbeck Trenches, Wulverghen - 28 May 1915: Hot day, little wind. At 1am Listening Post of C Coy attacked by enemy who were driven off, leaving in the field the body of an Under Officer Adam Horner, which was recovered by us and brought in. He wore the Iron Cross ribbon & belonged to 9 Coy 5th Bavarian Reserve Regiment.

The post, Cpl Bromage, Ptes Hill 1932, Eaton 1933 and Hall 2308 behaved with great gallantry. Pte Hill was killed & Pte Eaton, though wounded, continued to fire with fresh deliberation. On the enemy being driven off Cpl Bromage and Pte Hall took in the body of Pte Hill & assisted the wounded man and then went out again to the Post to recover the body of the German Under Officer killed. The body was buried at La Plus Douve Farm. Trenches visited by B. Gen & staff in connection with above.

Bn HQ shelling in the evening, no casualties but a certain amount of material damage done.

Bn relieved in the trenches by 1/8 Warwicks & proceeded to Hutments at Jonesville in Divisional Reserve.
