Circumstances of Death

Robert is listed as dying of wounds on 15th October 1916 and he was buried at Grove Town Cemetery, Meaulte which at that time was used by the 34th and 2nd/2nd London Casualty Clearing Stations. There is also some confusion about exactly which Battalion of the Worcestershire Regiment he was serving with. He has two CWGC grave registration documents one of which states 1st Battalion and the other 4th. His other military records also show a similar disparity but we believe he was attached to the 4th Battalion at the time of his death, having arrived in France with the 1st Battalion.

In any case neither war diary gives sufficient information to identify exactly when and where Robert was originally wounded although we suspect that it was on 13th October with the 4th Battalion during their relief of the Essex Regiment near Gueudecourt, click here for more.
